A self-described "nerd for all seasons," Effie has a long and varied career with an emphasis on philanthropy and community service. Recently honored by President Bush, she received the Call To Service Presidential Volunteer Service Award for her 17,000+ hours and over 30 years of volunteerism during her life-time. 2007 brought a greater honor as President Bush and the Points of Light Foundation appointed Ms. Horning as a Daily Point of Light. Although this award is given to many groups, Effie was recognized for her contributions as an individual.
A pro-active member of the community, she strives to formulate and implement resolutions to issues. Having served as Chair for the Community Health Care Advisory Council, she demonstrates this passion in her professional and personal lives. Always finding ways to promote service, she created the Spirit of Excellence and Spirit of H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People is Empowering) Awards. The next international ceremony will take place this July on the grounds of Wilson Creek Vinyards and Winery in Temecula, California.
A Queen of Many Titles, Effie uses her "entitlement" to further her philanthropic endeavors. Her Queen's Team/ Crowns for the Cure, was created to promote community service in the world community. Although created for pageant title holders, the Team is composed of many "lay" persons, men, women and children. Further, Effie uses her pageant productions, Ms. World, Ms. US, La Reina de Esperanza, Worldwide Pageant and Radiance World Pageant as philanthropic organizations dedicated to further serving the world community.
Her full entitlement is The Revererend Doctor Effie Horning LPT, RN, DSH, but she prefers "F." As a Past Honored Queen for the International Order of Job's Daughters, she recounts serving three terms as Chaplain among her favorite memories. "In the medical world, we don't always appreciate how much the spirit of our patients require treatment. That isn't to say that I will preach theology to my patients. Rather, when applicable, I try to get beneath the surface and facilitate healing from the inside out. In some cases that is direct. Others, it is a matter of referring to the appropriate source and providing comfort to the patients and their families."
Having performed Raks Sharki for international dignitaries and heads of state, she is known as "Sanura" in the entertainment field. Her Middle Eastern Productions has served to promote the beauty of La Danse Orientale, educate the general public regarding it's myths and misperception as well as entertain at many high profile fund raising events. Although a brief retirement from dancing was embarked upon, it was short-lived. Despite the high demand for Middle Eastern Dance, Sanura is a regular perfomer for Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve. "I absolutely LOVE dancing for NYRE. The taping is quite long and hard, but the experience is phenomenal. It's a wonderful opportunity to explore different genres and sounds. Thanks to this past year's perfomances, I was compelled to buy CD's of three of the performers. The Sugarland CD is quite popular with my daughter. It seems to disappear frequently to her room!"
Her personal history includes conquering the challenges of cancer, domestic violence and septic shock. With Medical and Psychiatric licences and certifications in multiple medical specialties, this Resource Specialist is a mentor within the hospital and lay communities. Effie uses this knowledge to educate the public, and her patients, on their rights, risks and responsibilites for personal health and treatment options. As the Executive Director of The Crowns For The Cure, she provides resources, services and information specifically as they relate to breast cancer. The advanced screening tool, The Gail Model, was made a free resource to the public and was previously only accessable by the medical community. Her goal is to fulfill her platform statement "beyond surviving...THRIVING!" and encourage all persons "be yourself, live your dreams, dare to be."
Effie's award winning art and baking have generated interest in the celebrity communities. Her Design's by "F" have been invited into the S.W.A.G. (Stuff We All Get) of many high-profile Hollywood events. Having created "Survivor SWAG" for events such as the City of Hope Walk for Hope, she maintains her resolution to serve the community "by recognizing our unsung hero's...those who have have faced or continue to face the challenges of cancer." This special SWAG is available for many organizations.
